Golden Mile Food Centre

Golden Mile Food Centre

Towards the northwestern end of Beach Road is a bunch of buildings that bear the name Golden Mile. There's Golden Mile Tower and Golden Mile Complex that make up Singapore's Little Thailand. And across the road is Golden Mile Food Centre, or what many local males affectionally call "the army market".

I've talked about this unofficial army supply depot in Part 7 of the series, but I didn't go into detail about the food side of things. This being a hawker center at its core, there are quite a number of good stalls that serve not so standard fare here. What do I meant by that?

Well, the 91 Fried Kway Teow Mee stall serves their dish with stir fried leafy vegetables (chye sim), a combination that doesn't quite gel when you think of traditional greasy char kway teow. There is also Charlie's who offers Peranakan dishes, something that is rare in a hawker setting. Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly is the place my mom and I always go to when in the area. We swear by the chin chow (grass jelly) desserts that you see me eating in the book. I have yet to try it, but apparently Burgs serves up really tasty Halal burgers at very reasonable prices.

This is really just a small sampling of the variety of food on offer. Golden Mile Food Centre may be a little out of the way, but if you make the trip, there is a very good chance you'll be satisfied. Just watch out for the weekend crowd.
