Judging by how long this expanded list is, I now realize why overseas publishers have passed on the Tourist series and why some folks say it is un-reviewable or non-literary. But hey, I was trying to capture reality and this was the best compromise I could settle on!

  • ABC American-born Chinese
  • Ai hiam mai? (Hokkien) Would you like it spicy?
  • Ai piah jia eh iah! (Hokkien) You need to give it your all in order to win!
  • baka (bah-kah) (Japanese) idiot
  • beng (Hokkien) a man who dresses garishly to make a statement, and who speaks and acts in a manner perceived to be lacking in taste and sophistication; the male counterpart to the lian
  • boh chup (Hokkien) to be nonchalant or indifferent towards
  • chope to reserve
  • die-die definitely, to commit to something to the death
  • kampong (Malay) village
  • kena (Malay) to get affected by or to suffer
  • Kwa si mi? (Hokkien) What are you looking at?
  • lian (Hokkien) a woman who dresses garishly to make a statement, and who speaks and acts in a manner perceived to be lacking in taste and sophistication; the female counterpart to the beng
  • lobang (Malay) commonly used to refer to having connections that will lead to a desired outcome, literally a gap or opening
  • mati (Malay) to perish
  • moshi-moshi (Japanese) hello, used mostly as a greeting on the phone
  • MRT Mass Rapid Transit, Singapore's island-wide railway system
  • siao (Hokkien) crazy
  • siong (Hokkien) taxing
  • sou desu ne (Japanese) I see
  • SMRT a public transport corporation that operates island-wide rail, bus, and taxi services
  • sugoi (soo-goy) (Japanese) great or awesome
  • tahan (Malay) to endure
  • tai tai (Mandarin) a wealthy, married lady of means and leisure, who spends her time lunching with other privileged ladies and shopping at high-end boutiques
  • TIBS Trans-Island Bus Services, a public bus operator that ran between 1982 and 2004 before becoming fully subsumed under SMRT Corporation

  • 这可是你的梦。(zhe ke shi ni de meng) (Mandarin) This is your dream.
